What is the boldest thing you’ve ever done?

Move from New York City to Phoenix AZ with a man I hardly knew for a strange job, get pregnant by my new boss and keep the baby. The outcome is that 40 years later I am still here, although I’ve changed husbands and careers multiple times. That first move set me up to operate outside the box.

What is a fear you still have that you want to overcome and what are you doing about it?

Death. I am studying Buddhism and trying to understand non-attachment.

What would you like to tell other women about being bold? Why should they be bold?

There’s no downside to being bold. From my own experience and that of my two daughters I have learned that when you ask for something boldly, you get it. Otherwise, you just stand on the sidelines. Both of my daughters are even more gutsy in certain ways than I am.

Oh, and the older you get, the less you will even worry about being bold. I don’t give a rat’s ass anymore what anyone thinks.

What is the boldest thing you’ve ever done?

The boldest thing I’ve ever done was to walk away from my position as a tenured professor at a major research university. I’d invested more than 20 years in that academic career, but I was bored and restless for my next growth spurt. I left to become a women’s coach, and I’ve never looked back. I am deliriously happy.

What is a fear you still have that you want to overcome and what are you doing about it?

Fear really isn’t something in my constitution. I’m too curious and adventurous to let fear get in my way. I remember back in the eighth grade. Sister Edwardina told me to stand up in the middle of the classroom and berated me for being “bold.” “You are bold, girl!” she scolded me repeatedly, because I had gone above her head to lobby the principal so we could wear our own clothes (not the school uniform) on our school trip. Even then, I knew to take it as a compliment.

What would you like to tell other women about being bold? Why should they be bold?

Being bold is simply about being true to yourself. Nothing more, nothing less. Don’t make it complicated.

Why are you wearing…THAT?

I’ve been asked countless times why I wear a boa and tiara to conferences. I have an array of answers depending on my mood ranging from “it’s just my look” to “to stand out in a crowd.” There isn’t just one reason, and I discover new ones every day including “it is a great ice-breaker,” and “it makes people smile.”

I’ve been adding a tiara and boa to my outfit for a few years now and have worn it at Blissdom, BlogHer, Web 2.0 Expo, and many other events. I’ve had more smiles and surprised looks than scowls in reaction to my pink accessories – and yes, my tiaras and boas are always pink. And in case you are wondering, if I wear these things on the street, I do get “where’s the bachelorette party!”

In looking to infuse some fun into my work, I’m apparently creating a trademark look. But this isn’t meant to be only MY look. I hope more women adopt the tiara and boa – either literally or even figuratively – and give it their own twist, wearing it boldly – and without a hint of irony – when they are at events and public places. Be seen. Be noticed. Be unafraid.

But note that I did say not just literally, but figuratively, too. By this, I mean that I want to see more women simply being bold, unafraid to draw attention to themselves, and not hesitant to toot their own horns.

What do you do – or wear – that is So. Totally. You? How are YOU being bold?
